School Term to Resume as Normal from 2026 - Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that steps have been taken to conduct examinations and resume the school term as normal from the beginning of 2026.

The Prime Minister made this statement while responding to a question raised in Parliament on January 8.

Speaking further, Dr. Amarasuriya mentioned,

“I would like to inform the House that the examination schedule conducted by the Sri Lanka Examinations Department is likely to be restored to its previous status from the start of 2026. Due to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the economic crisis, social unrest, and transportation difficulties since 2020, the school year was extended. However, plans are in place to conclude the 2025 school year in December, ensuring that the 181 instructional days for the year are met.

This adjustment will allow us to normalize the academic calendar starting from 2026. The government remains committed to providing 13 years of uninterrupted education for all children and aims to steer the school system toward a new phase of development.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that this vision includes significant human resource development, structural changes to the education system, and necessary curriculum reforms. This will involve preparing teachers for new curricula, providing comprehensive training, and directing them toward capacity development.

The government is confident that these measures will pave the way for a robust and progressive education system, ensuring quality education for all Sri Lankan children.
