Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that long-term investments in the arts must be made to create an environment where artists can sustain themselves within the country.
She made this statement while extending her best wishes to the winners at the 44th Youth Awards Ceremony held at the Temple Trees on the 6th.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya further stated:
What we expect from a work of art is not only the aesthetic satisfaction but also the opportunity for the audience to reflect and receive a message for society. This process satisfies both the audience and the creator. However, some works of art are known to be challenging leaving the audience in discomfort. Yet, it is through this discomfort that they are encouraged to reflect. We have witnessed such artistic creations. Artists who gained knowledge and inspiration from the National Youth Services Council continue to shine in the artistic sphere today, successfully engaging in creative endeavors and earning the admiration of the audience and we can witness that. These artists are not mere fleeting stars; they are the ones who illuminate our path through their artistry. Art is essential for fostering an empathetic and intellectually rich youth community. A child who grows up immersed in art becomes a well-rounded individual in the future. Through this, they effortlessly develop the ability to appreciate the qualities of others and enhance their imaginative capacity.
We acknowledge that there is a shortage of accomplished artists in the present. Artists in the past inspired their creation purely based on talent and creativity, despite seeking financial gain. However, it has become impossible to create new creations without financial resources today. There was a time when money was not the primary concern. However it has transferred to a long term investment that has led artists no longer motivate for new creations. Due to various circumstances, sustaining a livelihood through art has become increasingly difficult. We should change the situation. At a time like this, the efforts of the National Youth Services Council should be highly appreciated for organizing competitions at the ground level under 91 different categories and recognizing young talents at the national level. It can be witnessed as a significant contribution to the government’s mission of building the nation. The Youth Awards Ceremony has introduced many talented artists who have showcased their skills on stage, in cinema, and on television. I firmly believe that the young award-winning artists of today will follow the footsteps of their predecessors and become the future pioneers of the art world.
Your effort to emphasize the objective of fostering artistic and cultural appreciation and entertainment under the policy statement of the government and to nourish the people with cultural artistic sensitivity will be highly appreciated.
